Lizzie Morgan - My Year at RTP
Lizzie Morgan recently completed a year long placement with the firm’s London office.
What attracted you to apply for a position with Roger Tym & Partners?
I knew I wanted to work in London for the year and preferably in the private sector. I was aware of RTP’s good reputation and thought it looked like and interesting and friendly company to work for.
What projects have you worked on in the past year?
I started off mainly working on the Somerfield job with a few other things in between such as NLUD and various small projects. Camille and I swapped roles halfway through the year and since then I have worked on three large retail studies, more NLUD and Somerfield, and various other projects including the East Hants Employment Land Review.
What has been the high point of your year with Roger Tym & Partners?
I have really enjoyed the social aspects of the job and the people in general.
And the low point?
There haven’t been any major low points but getting lost somewhere in Surrey whilst carrying out town centre healthchecks wasn’t particularly enjoyable!
What lessons have you learnt?
Too many to list! This year has taught me more than my three previous years at university put together.
What advice would you give to students looking for a placement?
Be open minded, don’t be afraid to move to a new town/city and don’t be disheartened by rejections – I had plenty.
What advice would you give to students beginning a placement?
Make the most of it, learn as much as you can from it, be enthusiastic and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
What is the most important thing you have learnt during your time with us (in a work sense)?
That there is so much more I have to learn. Also, don’t leave things to the last minute!
What are your future study/career plans?
I am going back to university in September to complete my final year, then I hope to travel a bit before entering the real world!
