Hastings - The Stade

Regeneration of Hastings seaside town

The Stade project aims to bring a new Jerwood Foundation art gallery, a piazza, community facilities and supporting infrastructure to a prominent seafront site in Hastings, near the Old Town.

Roger Tym & Partners was appointed in June 2008 to undertake business planning and economic appraisal of this cultural and economic development project.  Our work included a successful bid to CABE's Sea Change large grants programme, as well as work to assist in securing other funding.

We had a vital role in the development of initial plans for revenue activity using the new capital development, including identifying a new set of supporting cultural, economic and community projects.  We reviewed the impact of arts and public realm development projects, surveyed existing and potential visitors to determine changes in behaviour that would occur once the project was complete, and spoke to local businesses to determine the catalytic investment impacts.

Hastings has seen significant regeneration investment recently, but it remains a relatively deprived location within the South East, with the economy attempting to restructure from its traditional coastal resort tourism origins.  This project will also support some of the other investment in Hastings, particularly the new University Centre Hastings and the Digital Media Centre, allow the development of a year-round cultural visitor economy, and catalyse private sector investment.
