Port of Falmouth Masterplan

In early 2010, RTP was commissioned to provide economic impact assessment of future development on the Port of Falmouth, to feed into Tibbalds' masterplan.

Options for the port are currently being looked at in detail. There will be an opportunity for comment on the masterplan at a public consultation event to be held in Autumn 2010.

Our study has included three stages of work:

Stage 1
  • baseline analysis and assessment of tenants' spatial requirements
  • forecasts of future growth by industrial sectors
  • viability assessment of re-opening of the rail facility
Stage 2

  • development of the masterplan options
  • economic appraisal of all of the options against "do nothing" scenario
  • sustainability appraisal of the options
  • costing of proposed infrastructure and buildings for each of the options
Stage 3
  • development of a preferred option,
  • production of a business case
  • Delivery and Funding Strategy.
"There are enormous opportunities for Falmouth and this study will allow us to look at the big picture for the port.  We want to make sure that we come up with a co-ordinated plan to maximise all of the Port’s attributes and the contribution it can make to Cornwall’s economy." Carolyn Rule, Cornwall Council cabinet member for economy and regeneration. We assessed the strengths and growth of sectors such as cruise, leisure boating, marine related events, marine renewables, cargo, ship repair, yacht building, and oil bunkering.  We also carried out an economic appraisal of four masterplan options, resulting in development of the preferred option.

The team is currently producing the Delivery and Funding Strategy aiming to capture local authority and Cornwall ERDF funding for the masterplan delivery.
