The Team
John has nearly 30 years' experience in town planning and regeneration. He has been a detailed understanding of its particular development pressures and agencies, but he also leads projects elsewhere in the UK and built his earlier experience through 20 years work in London.
John has worked in local authorities, higher education and consultancy, at a range of spatial scales from local regeneration projects through to national and international comparative studies. He has worked with a wide range of clients including community organisations, local authorities, regional agencies, Central Government Departments, partnership organisations, commercial operators and businesses.
In recent years, John's experience has included work on economic impact studies with Bristol Port and Bristol Airport, regional planning studies which fed the South West Regional Spatial Strategy, a Strategic Framework for Swansea City Centre, developing a “toolkit” for Sustainable Rural Communities, and Evaluation of the South West Rural Renaissance Initiative.
Prior to joining RTP, John was Director of Strategic Initiatives at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, where responsibilities included City Challenge, European funding, regeneration programmes with the London Docklands Development Corporation, and City-fringe development.
He particularly enjoys structured research which supports the delivery of well-planned development. “I'm happy working with all sorts of clients and organisations, on a variety of issues, but happiest when I can see the results feeding directly into positive action.”
