Conrad Phoenix granted planning permission at Canada Water
January 2010
On 19 January, London Borough of Southwark resolved to grant planning permission for Conrad Phoenix’s proposals for the regeneration of Canada Water Site C (the Decathlon site), subject to Section 106 and referral to the Mayor of London. The final plans for the site incorporate feedback from the local community, following an extensive period of public consultation, led by M&N Communications.
The detailed planning application for Site C comprises the demolition of the existing retail warehouses and the development of a 9,104 sq m retail unit to accommodate a new Decathlon store (A1 use), which will serve as the sports retailer’s UK headquarters.
Southwark Council praised developer Conrad Phoenix for presenting “a scheme that has been well conceived” and demonstrates “exemplary design” providing “excellent standards of living accommodation”. The Council went on to commend the scheme for being “fresh and contemporary” with landscaping that “works well” with a “generous boulevard that gives this development its sense of place”.
John Parmiter, Partner at Roger Tym & Partners, says
“The planning committee’s decision is an important and welcome step forward for the regeneration of this landmark site in Canada Water, which for too long has been dominated by low density retail sheds and extensive surface level car parking. The proposed development will provide much needed new homes, a new purpose built store for Decathlon and a much improved waterside environment with cafes and restaurants. We look forward to working with officers at Southwark and the GLA over the next few weeks to secure a formal permission.’
