Masterplan adopted for Porthcressa, Isles of Scilly
September 2009
On 10 September, the Council of the Isles of Scilly adopted a new masterplan for the
Porthcressa area of St. Mary’s as Supplementary Planning Guidance, after an 18-month study led by Roger
Tym & Partners. This is the most south-westerly masterplan prepared in the UK, and will guide investment and development in an area of very special character.
The area includes important civic and community functions as well as reflecting the history and environmental qualities of its island setting. It has the potential to help strengthen and diversify the local economy. Proposals include conversion of an old lifeboat station to a new community learning centre, conservation and adaptation of the Town Hall building to create a community economic hub and other investment which is hoped can be sourced from the Convergence Programme, Local Action, and other sources. Over 100 people (out of an island population of 1600) attended the final public meetings to hear about the proposals.

RTP led a team which included Sandover Associates (design and consultation) and Scott Wilson (landscape and engineering), and worked closely with a Council-led steering group, other stakeholders, and the local community.
