Project and policy appraisals and evaluation

Developing successful policies and projects

The key to developing successful projects and policies is a sound knowledge of what works and what does not.  This includes drawing in experience across a variety of themes and from other locations to provide a well-grounded realism.  We do this from experience in appraising and evaluating projects, programmes and policies covering physical regeneration, sustainable energy projects, transport, community development and skills.  This has helped clients including central government, local authorities and regeneration agencies to learn from the past and in making future investment decisions.

Learning from projects and policies and applying this knowledge is at the heart of what we do.  We work to understand, identify and estimate the intended (and sometimes unintended) impacts of real projects and policies.  Knowledge of tools for pricing non-market benefits is important, and it is here where we have mostly designed and evolved techniques.

Our role in this process can be as a ‘critical friend', using evidence and offering sound economic principles to positively develop and shape ideas for determining the best allocation of resources.
